DP World Hong Kong is the first terminal to have had Strainstall’s Container Weight System™ installed on rubber tyre gantries

Strainstall (Hong Kong, China) - Demonstrating the versatility of its Container Weight System™, Strainstall successfully installed CWS™ onto four rubber tyre gantries at DP World Hong Kong.

The requirements:

Following the successful installation of CWS™ onto approximately 90 straddle carriers at DP World Southampton, Strainstall was awarded the contract for a container weight monitoring system to be installed onto four pre-exisiting rubber tyre gantries at DP World Hong Kong.

Requiring a SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) compliant method of obtaining the verified gross mass (VGM) of containers, the DP World Hong Kong terminal needed a product that could be retrofitted to its existing infrastructure to avoid costly equipment replacement and to minimise the potential for significant loss of productivity during implementation.

Strainstall’s solution:

The commissioning of Strainstall’s CWS™ at DP World Hong Kong marked the first time the system had been installed onto rubber tyre gantries – an effective demonstration of its versatility. Designed to be easily retrofitted to existing equipment, CWS™ is available with different options including load cell, annular load cell and twistlock depending on customer requirements.

For this installation, four diaphragm load cells were fitted underneath the spreader connecting twistlocks, ensuring CWS™ is integrated permanently.

Strainstall enables the VGM of containers to be obtained as part of the standard operation of the rubber tyre gantry, meaning the terminal is fully SOLAS compliant without affecting day-to-day operations and downtime is kept to a minimum.

Installation:

Installation of CWS™ was carried out over two days on the four machines to reduce downtime and ensure minimal disruption to the terminal operations.

Strainstall provided an industrial Wi-Fi router to enable the system to communicate directly with DP World Hong Kong’s terminal operating system (TOS), sending time-stamped VGM data to allow the TOS to automatically link the VGM with a specific container.

Results:

All four DP World Hong Kong RTG’s were successfully fitted with CWS™ and the terminal is now able to use its equipment to provide SOLAS compliant VGM data.

Strainstall has since fitted CWS™ to rubber tyre gantries in ports in South Africa and Greece among others.
