Market leading design and manufacturing specialists in load measurement systems that are utilised worldwide to provide innovative solutions to complex problems in challenging environments including aerospace, marine, oil & gas, offshore, heavy lifting and hazardous areas. Experts in delivering a comprehensive range of the highest quality standard and customised load cells along with associated instrumentation, through a “right first time” design, manufacturing and validation approach. LCM Systems have recently been acquired by Interface, Inc., a high accuracy load cell manufacturer based in the USA, who are committed to investing in the expansion of LCM Systems as their European hub.

The Role:

Due to retirement LCM are currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineering Manager/Senior Design Engineering Manager to join our expanding engineering team to support ongoing investment and growth. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this role will be responsible for the overall management of the engineering operation including planning, processes and strategic direction. This is a full time role based on site at LCM Systems in Newport, Isle of Wight.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical engineering activities across applicable projects through the mechanical engineers and teams as assigned, ensuring that such teams work cohesively and collaborate effectively.
  • Advocate and lead the adoption of best practice mechanical engineering across applicable projects to improve the delivery of the engineering function to time, cost, quality and specification, whilst ensuring the appropriate level of effective technical governance is in place for safety, compliance, quality and reliability.
  • Ensure the mechanical engineering of product development meets requirements from stakeholder through to subsystem level requirements, ensuring effective validation and verification plans are in place.
  • Lead the mechanical engineering budgets for people and financial resources and contribute to development of future forecasting with the Manager Director.
  • Drive product innovation while maintaining an awareness of competitor and wider industry solutions.
  • Identify new product ideas and concepts from the viewpoint of engineering concepts and report these to the sales and marketing manager.
  • Support the wider business and sales teams with technical and engineering support and training needs.
  • Focus on achieving direct business KPI’s. Maintain knowledge of processes and market developments to ensure the company engineering resources remain current and proactive.
  • Contribute to formulation of policy and strategy as a member of the management team.
  • Communicate company direction, plans and performance to team members, ensuring team is focused on achieving company goals.

Essential Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience of practical application of best-practice mechanical engineering in a technical manufacturing company, preferably within the sensor industry.
  • Experienced in lead and change management.
  • Experienced in mechanical and FEA CAD.
  • Experience working in a regulated, compliance-driven industry (ideally including ATEX/IECEx).
  • Excellent influencing and negotiation skills at multiple organisational levels.
  • Clear leadership behaviours: Take ownership and through collaboration bring colleagues with them, even though they may not be direct reports (essential)
  • A high level of integrity and accountability with a results-driven mindset. Able to set the standard and hold people accountable to deliver.
  • Defining and maintaining departmental KPI’s towards achieving OTD and ‘right first time’ design approach.
  • Able to ‘teach’ best-practice mechanical engineering and transfer accumulated knowledge to engineers & apprentices.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with employees and customers at all levels.
  • Ability to prioritise work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including meeting platforms.
  • Knowledge of materials and steel milling manufacturing processes.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to support customers, sales, production and suppliers for any technical issues.

Advantageous:

Previous experience in load cell and strain gauge technology, with a strong understanding and knowledge of product design and compliance in ATEX/IECEx regulated markets.

Qualifications:

Qualified to HNC/degree level or higher in mechanical engineering.
