Bizerba (Germany) - “Digitalization has become a reality and the significance of intelligent applications will continue to expand in leaps and bounds.” Hendrik Ohse, Director of Global Software Sales at Bizerba, knows what he’s talking about. Bizerba customers in the retail sector have shown a growing interest in software solutions that work with Artificial Intelligence. Not least because digitalization is also exerting considerable pressure on brick-and-mortar retail to adapt.
Networking, digitalization, and Artificial Intelligence are now key future topics in the retail sector as well, and they clearly promise store operators positive revenue effects. Consider the checkout area, for example. Today, countless stores employ self-checkout solutions that allow customers to scan and pay for their products on their own using contactless technology. As a result, staff can be reduced in the checkout area and the freed-up space can be used more effectively.
There is, however, a familiar problem with self-checkout: Not all shopping carts fully match the actual products scanned. Scanning errors are common, resulting in huge losses for retailers. Some retailers have already uninstalled these kinds of scan & go solutions for precisely this reason. As an innovative solution developer, it makes sense for Bizerba to leverage its experience and expertise in the retail sector to develop digital solutions for such well-known problems.
Supersmart powered by Bizerba:
The Supersmart Scan & Go Loss Prevention System powered by Bizerba, for example, features an unparalleled validation process, which uses weight sensors and algorithms to check in a matter of seconds whether customers have scanned all products correctly during self-checkout. The solution addresses one sore spot that many retailers face with regard to Scan & Go: It drastically reduces lost sales as a result of shrinkage. Retailers can either supplement and upgrade their existing Scan & Go solution with the Supersmart validation process or, if installing a new solution, acquire everything from a single source. Depending on the specific type and size of the store, Supersmart can be either installed as a large option for shopping carts or, alternatively, as a space-saving solution for shopping baskets. Both versions contain intelligent hardware components as well as Artificial Intelligence-based software that enhances checkout times and processes at the point of sale.
With this loss prevention system Bizerba solves a major problem with respect to the shopping of the future. For this reason METRO is now also testing Supersmart: The pilot project was launched at the METRO store in Neuss, Germany, a few weeks ago. Shoppers there can now scan products with the METRO app on their smartphones, add them to their shopping carts, and then have the entire shopping cart checked in mere seconds at the Supersmart validation station. Payment is then made contactless at the self-checkout terminal.
Self-checkout with validation in the smallest of spaces:
The most recent innovation in the Bizerba portfolio in this segment is known as "TableSmart". The revolutionary development makes scanning each product unnecessary and the validation process is already integrated into the solution. This makes the checkout process a lot faster and easier for shoppers. The solution also features the required level of security for retailers in terms of shrinkage.
Purchases set down in the designated area are automatically detected and recorded by TableSmart using object recognition in combination with AI. At the same time, weighing sensors check if the recording is complete, thus preventing loss of sales through any potentially improper detection. After no more than three seconds in total for recognition, detection and validation, the shopper can make contactless payments with a card or smartphone. For customers, the extremely fast check-out process prevents annoying waiting times in the checkout area while ensuring a superior shopping experience. TableSmart can be implemented even in the smallest of spaces, making it ideal for convenience stores or at gas stations, for example. The first pilot store has now successfully put TableSmart into operation with an assortment of around 800 items.
